This is a very recent web interface that I absolutely love. It is inspired by *magneto-ms's Skinner's Instinct portfolio. His is absolutely amazing, but it is flash; mine is completely HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It is extremely interactive, much like a normal operating system, but it is not confusing or overloaded with extras (so I am told). This is my first design with red as a primary color; normally I don't use red for anything, but it just seemed to fit so well. The media player was a little tricky, but it turned out good. The movable windows were really simple, yet they add so much to the overall design. I added my current class schedule so that I could use this for my semester project in my CS class; yes, I am done ahead of time, but the professor said it was very good and I could use it if I added a schedule to it. The only downside is that it is Firefox only, as IE does not natively support transparent PNGs, which make the whole interface possible. I know there are work-arounds, but the designer should not have to work around a specific browser; Firefox meets all of my needs, and eventually IE should catch up to where Firefox is now, at least in support and features. I have not tested this with IE7, so if someone using IE7 could let me know how it compares to the screenshot (or, better yet, to the live version in Firefox), I would be eternally grateful.
It is hand designed and coded in its entirety, using some scripts I created for previous designs, which were hand coded as well, but not specifically for this interface. View the live version. Comments, suggestions, and questions are warmly welcomed. |

Also the design is not great. It would be cooler if it would be just simple. simple is often better that trying to do difficult if you know what i mean.
You should check some tutorials on webdesign. Also some articles like the 10 most fustrating website features might be a good read (i learned a great deal from that)
Good luck,
Kijuri
btw. you can't just use music on your website which is not yours. copyright only goes from a piece of art/music/whatever media after 50-70 years.

And thanks for the heads-up on the music, but it is my understanding that 30 second clips are free rights media. I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that as long as I only loop the same 30 seconds, it is completely within my rights without infringing upon the authors' copyrights. I guess I am going to have to look into that some more; for now, I guess I will disable the music.

i used firefox to view it, and tried in it IE and it worked in both for me anyway

I guess I used a red color theme mostly because I always avoided red previously; I figured I might as well give it a shot, but maybe you have an idea or two for a different color scheme for something similar (hopefully much better) than this? And I never really thought about how big it all looks; I really want to try making a more minimalistic-style version now, just to see. I am so glad you pointed that out.
Again, thank you for the wonderful advice!

i actually hate the colour red so much thats maybe why i was harsh about the colours. i dont really have any ideas for a colour scheme. ive always liked (light) green for website design but there is too many of them around at the moment ive steered clear of it so far. I usually go for blues but thats very common too.
but like i said im impressed you managed to get the same look as the flash using html etc. if you dont mind me asking, what script did you use for the slideshow/gallery? or is that all css coding?
i just went back on the site and it did load quicker than before, i had some issues with the top being cut off until i veiwed it in fullscreen mode. just to give u an ide this is what it look like on my screen [link] im using a widescreen so i dont know if that affects it. i think maybe in the top right hand corner theres supposed to be a clock/countdown and some logo but its covered, is this right?

As for the top being cut off, that is because I made the window a little too big, and so at lower resolutions it covers up more than I had intended. I thought I had left enough room to accomodate for this, but apparently I miscalculated. I had intended it to work on any resolution taller than 768 (i.e. 1024x768), but anyone using that resolution must switch to full-screen mode. And I just now realized that I forgot to mention this on the loading page. You are right about the logo and the clock, but they are not quite as important as the actual content (i.e. the portfolio, and other windows).
Thank you so much for your help; thanks to your advice, I might be able to scrap this, should I choose to rework it.
